Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved taking part in various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to play some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly play against one another. He had access into some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
